One thing experience teaches you is that helping isn’t always about stepping in.
Over the years, I’ve worked with some very capable people.
People who are used to taking responsibility, getting things done and being someone others can rely on.
And there’s a strength in that.
But sometimes the very qualities that have helped someone succeed can also make it difficult to step back.
Not every problem needs solving.
Not every silence needs filling.
Not every difficult situation needs someone to take charge.
Sometimes people need the space to work something through for themselves.
That doesn’t mean being distant or unavailable.
It means being thoughtful about when to step in, when to stay alongside someone, and when to let them find their own way through something.
I think that distinction matters in coaching, but it matters in everyday relationships and leadership too.
For me, good support isn’t about having all the answers.
It’s about being present enough to know what is actually needed.
Sometimes that’s a challenge.
Sometimes it’s a question.
Sometimes it’s simply listening.
And sometimes it’s knowing that the best thing you can do is leave a little space.
